Grandma Maude’s Soft Gingerbread Cookies
Cookies:
1c white OR brown sugar
1c shortening OR butter
1c molasses
1 egg
1 c sour milk OR sour cream (sour it with a T vinegar)
add 2t soda to sour milk just before adding to batter
1T vinegar
add 1t soda into vinegar just before adding to batter
1t each of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and salt
½ t nutmeg
5-6 c flour

Cream shortening and sugar. Add molasses and egg, and continue to cream mixture. Then add milk, vinegar, spices, salt. Slowly add in flour. Dough will be sticky and must be refrigerated at least an hour.
Roll a portion onto a lightly floured board. For big, fat gingerbread men, leave dough about ¼ inch thick. 1/8 inch for other cookies.
Bake at 325 to 350 8 -10 minutes. Remove carefully and cool completely before handling, or they may break.

Ice with Orange Butter Icing.

1c soft butter
zest of one or two oranges
enough orange juice to mix into a fondant type consistency.

mom, i don't think that i used the vinegar with the sour cream... i think the vinegar is only if you use milk. so tell me though, did you in fact shake your head at my icing? heehee!

ReplyDeletei've been meaning to drop by earlier after seeing this link on your mom's blog, but just kept forgetting. your gingerbread men look awesome. your mom is a tough act to follow so i wouldn't even dare compare any of my creations to hers. i'd be lucky if i didn't mess up the dough. how 'bouts using little miniature stars or flowers for the eyes? ok, maybe a bit too girly? i don't know, just a suggestion. glad you linked so i could find your blog. happy holidays!
